h265 is a perfectly cromulent standard (it's like, the official MPEG group's next version of h264) and it encodes a fair bit smaller at better quality, it's just a lot of existing stuff was built before it started getting popular, and a lot of devices that play h264 rely on hardware decoder support, which isn't there for h265

It'll get there eventually, though, like how the only thing most devices would play back was mp3, but now we have newer, better things.
